Avobenzone

Also known as: Parsol 1789, BMDBM

INCI name: Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane

What it does

Chemical UVA filter — the most widely used UVA filter globally.

Benefits

Provides strong UVA1 protection (the deeper-penetrating, aging-causing rays). When properly stabilized with octocrylene or other photo-stabilisers, it offers reliable broad-spectrum coverage at modest concentrations.

Concerns & Risks

Photo-unstable on its own — degrades in sunlight without stabilisers, which means weakening protection through the day. Some people experience irritation. The breakdown products have been studied for endocrine effects, though current evidence in topical use is reassuring.
