Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel

Featherlight gel with hyaluronic acid and an amino-acid moisture complex — pleasant on oily skin, but fragranced, dyed and pricey for what it is.

Is Neutrogena Hydro Boost good for oily skin?

It can suit oily or combination skin that feels tight: a light, fast-absorbing gel with glycerin and hyaluronic acid. At about ₹24 a gram, though, it costs more than three times Minimalist's Vitamin B5 gel, which does the same job without the perfume.

Our Take

The current Hydro Boost is not the formula Neutrogena built the name on: alongside glycerin and sodium hyaluronate it now carries a natural-moisturising-factor complex — sodium PCA, sodium lactate, urea, trehalose and a string of amino acids — which is what “boosted with electrolytes” on the box refers to, and it is a sensible humectant system for dehydrated skin. What it lacks is much to hold that water in beyond a little dimethicone and synthetic beeswax, so dry skin in an air-conditioned office will want something richer on top. We'd also take issue with the marketing: the listing tells you moisturisers “do not increase the moisture level of the skin” and cause breakouts, which is simply untrue of most of the shelf, and Amazon's own ingredient text still shows the older formula. It also carries fragrance — billed as a “signature fragrance” — and a blue dye, neither of which a hydrating gel needs. At an MRP of ₹1,190 for 50 g, about ₹24 a gram, it costs more than three times Minimalist's Vitamin B5 gel, which does the same lightweight job without the perfume.

What we like

  • ✓ Light gel that sinks in fast with no residue
  • ✓ Updated humectant complex — sodium PCA, lactate, urea and amino acids
  • ✓ Glycerin and hyaluronic acid for quick hydration
  • ✓ Light enough for oily skin in humid weather

Worth knowing

  • → Fragrance and a blue dye in a daily face gel
  • → Little occlusion — not enough for dry skin on its own
  • → About ₹24 a gram at MRP, over three times Minimalist's B5 gel
  • → Listing claims ordinary moisturisers cause breakouts
  • → Amazon's ingredient text still shows the old formula

What buyers report

Reviewers mostly describe a light, water-based gel that sinks in quickly without greasiness, and oily and acne-prone users rate it for hot, humid months. The main caveat is staying power on drier areas: one combination-skin user needed a thicker cream on top, which fits its light occlusive base, and some notice the added fragrance, though nobody reported irritation.
