Lavender Oil

Also known as: Lavender essential oil

INCI name: Lavandula Angustifolia Oil

What it does

An essential oil distilled from lavender flowers, rich in linalool and linalyl acetate. In cosmetics it is used mainly for its scent.

Benefits

Fragrance. Hair-growth claims rest on a mouse study at concentrations far above anything in a shampoo; there is no good human evidence.

Concerns & Risks

Its main components oxidise in air into strong contact allergens, and lavender oil is a recognised cause of allergic contact dermatitis — one reason fragrance-sensitive skin and scalps react to “natural” products.
