Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate

What it does

A mild anionic cleanser made from coconut fatty acids and isethionic acid. It is the main detergent in syndet “beauty bars” and common in sulfate-free shampoos.

Benefits

Ranked below sodium lauryl sulfate for irritation across repeated tests, and its large micelles are thought to be why it is gentle on the skin barrier. Considered safe as used by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel.

Concerns & Risks

None well established beyond the general irritation any detergent can cause with heavy use.
